|
Latin music, also called Latin American music encompasses music from all the Latin American countries. Latin American music comes in many varieties ranging from the rural conjunto music of northern Mexico and the sophisticated habanera of Cuba to the symphonies of Heitor Villa-Lobos and the simple and moving Andean flute.
The turbulent Latin American History is reflected in its music. The music is very diverse and the only common thread between the music of the various regions is the use of Latin languages. Among them, Spanish is the most predominant. In Brazil, Portuguese is the most widely used language. Haitian creole is another language that is sometimes used in Latin songs.

The musical areas of Latin America can be divided into several areas. Andean music includes western South America, typically Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile and Venezuela, Central American music includes El Salvador, Belize, Nicaragua, Panama, Guatemala, Honduras, and Costa Rica and Caribbean music includes many Spanish and French-speaking islands in the Caribbean Sea, including Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Martinique and Guadeloupe. Among all these countries, Brazil is the only country that has its own musical specialty. This is mainly due to its large size and incredible diversity as well as its unique history as a Portuguese colony. Some of the people living in modern Latin America are actually African in origin, such as the Garifuna of Central America. The music of the Africans have infiltrated Latin music to some extent and lent a distinctive touch to Latin music. The modified music of Latin America has adapted some African performance style with European songs or vice versa
Most Latin American countries are Christian. Many of their religious carols and Christmas hymns are actually the original version of popular English hymns such as O Come, Emmanuel or O Come, All ye faithful.
