Christmas carols, also called noëls, are songs whose lyrics are on the theme of Christmas, or the winter season in general. Carols are usually sung in the period before Christmas. The tradition of singing Christmas carols hails back as far as the thirteenth century, although carols were originally communal songs sung during celebrations like harvest tide as well as Christmas. It was much later that carols began to be sung in church, and to be specifically associated with Christmas. Christmas carols, traditionally, have a strong tune and consist of a verse and/or chorus for group singing. Most of them are based on medieval chord patterns, and it is this that gives them their uniquely characteristic musical sound. Some of the oldest musical compositions that are still regularly sung are carols like 'Personent hodie' and 'Angels from the Realms of Glory' whose origins can be traced directly back to the Middle Ages.

Nowadays Christmas songs are sung regularly at Christian religious services. It is not very clear whether the word carol is a derivative of the French "carole" or the Latin "carula". In any case, dancing was abandoned quite early. Traditionally Christmas carols are only sung by choirs. In many places, kids are a special part of Christmas carols. Christ was very close to kids and there is no one better to celebrate Christmas than kids. For children, it is a very enjoyable time. The sweet voices of the kids singing carols ring throughout their surroundings and fill everyone with yuletide spirit. Some of the popular kids' Christmas songs are:
Deck The Halls
A Baby Just Like You
Frosty The Snowman
Jolly Old Saint Nicholas
Jingle Bells
Up On The House Top
Silver Bells
Angels From The Realms Of Glory
Blue Christmas
Ding Dong Merrily On High
