Pipes

There are a whole range of Christmas musical instruments used by musicians and singers to create the most beautiful melodies to complement the mood of the occasion. Pipes are one of the musical instruments which come from the tone resembling that of a chirping bird. There are various kinds of pipes used in different countries and are called by various names. The English call it pipes but it is also referred to as the tabor pipe to differentiate it from other musical instruments. This is three holed pipe generally played with one hand. The pipe is basically a perforated wind instrument.

The pipe as a Christmas musical instrument is popularly used by a number of musical bands and choirs who perform at various concerts and other Christmas gatherings. The list of popular pipes includes reed pipe, hornpipe, flageolet, or a tabor pipe. During the medieval period the pipe and tabor was a common combination all over Europe and till date remains popular in some parts of Europe and the America. There are many variations of the tabor pipe like the French galoubet, the Basque txistu, Picco Pipe, the Aragonese chiflo or the Andalusian pito rociero. In Slovakia they play a much larger pipe called the fujara.

Most of the pipes are traditionally made of bone, cane and wood. Nowadays pipes are also being made of metal as well as plastic. There are many kinds of pipes such as the tabor pipes which are no longer in use. The flageolet had developed in France and was used as orchestral instruments till the 19th century. The reed pipe is similar in construction to the fipple flutes but in the place of a whistle mouthpiece, it has a double reed. There are many other musical instruments such as trumpets, harp, tabor and others used in Christmas music.
