Harp

On the occasion of Christmas, Christians in all parts of the world celebrate with music, song and dance. Many concerts and musical events are held during Christmas where musicians play various instruments to set the mood for the occasion. The Harp is one of the popular Christmas musical instruments and is believed to have originated in Egypt. The earliest discovery of Harp goes back to around 3000 BC and is one of the oldest musical instruments. There are many references to harp as a musical instrument in ancient epics as well as in several Egyptian wall paintings.

Harp as a Christmas musical instrument has been used at many celebrations in various parts of the country. The harmonious tune of Harp creates an ambience which is very soothing. Harp is popular musical instrument which is played by strumming or plucking the strings and a person who play the harp is known as harpist. Harp strings are either made of nylon, gut, wire, or silk. Sometimes the nylon may be wound around copper. All harps comprises of a neck, resonator and strings. There are different types of harps which are found in various countries around the world.

There are some harps which are known as frame harps and have a forepillar while those which don’t have a forepillar are called open harps. The various types of harp include Pedal Harp, Lever Harp, Celtic Harp, Irish Harp, Wire-strung, Double strung and Lap Harps. In addition to harp, there are many other musical instruments which are used to compose Christmas music. There are a number of traditional Christian families who play the harp and other ancient musical instruments on the occasion of Christmas. The various other musical instruments played on Christmas are flutes, trumpets, piano, pipes, saxophones, banjo, guitar, drums and more.
